Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund

When people are in a foreign land or without resources and they are what is considered a minority they often face unfair practices. When this happens there is usually no place for them to turn for aid and representation. With the current political climate in the US, this is more real than ever before. The Appointment of Julie Kirchner as the ombudsman for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) assures that outside intervention is needed if migrant workers are to receive any semblance of fair treatment. This appointment encourages violations since this individual is the former leader of the anti-immigration and hate group known as Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). With this appointment, the ongoing and increase of federal enforcement practices which include racial profiling, killings, detainment and denial of proper representation of principally Hispanic workers are expected to increase dramatically.

When the subject of human rights violations for migrant workers is broached several organizations spring to mind. The most well known are the American Civil Liberties Union which has a reputation for defending the rights of minorities. The American Civil Liberties Union upholds and adheres to the principle that no human can be deemed as ‘illegal’ and considered outside the protection of the law. Other less known groups which advocate for minorities, migrants, and immigrants include National Immigration Forum, the Border Angels and The National Immigration Law Center. Add to this ever growing list the now highly active and motivated Frontera Fund, founded by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin.

The Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin Frontera Fund was launched in 2013 after the pair of respected journalists were illegally detained by Maricopa County sheriff’s department and held for 24 hours on trumped up charges because they did a cover story highlighting the gross abuse of the Constitution that was being carried by the infamous Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

They later sued and won a settlement of 37 million US dollars which has been earmarked to be used for the legal defense of those who brave the peril of crossing the southern border of the US to seek economic opportunity.

The Frontera Fund is intended to principally benefit the Hispanic Community which has been subjected to the most civil rights abuses and racial disparity in the state of Arizona. The community that this fund and Michale Lacey and Jim Larkin seek to defend are the source of much of our produce that is consumed throughout the United States and deserve protection and representation to preserve their dignity and fair treatment.
