The AIA was responsible for establishing professional standards for architects. Before the organization was formed anyone could say they were an architect as there were no agreed-upon standards of education and/or training in the field. The founders of the AIA according to zdnet.com, along with 16 other architects who soon joined, helped to create schools that taught architecture. They also helped to establish licensing laws for their profession across America so that when someone hired an architect they could have confidence the person had all of the education and experience to properly hold that role.
Today, the American Institute of Architects claims over 90,00 licensed architectural professionals as members of the organization. They all must agree to a code of ethics and professional conduct. This assures everyone that they are held to the highest standards of their industry and promise to do their work to the highest quality standards.
The AIA has five membership levels. This includes allied members, emeritus members, international associate members, associate members, and architect members. The highest level is architect member as it designates a member who is licensed to perform architecture in the U.S. The AIA also hands out a designation to its members called the Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. This designation, which only 2% of members hold, is comprised of those members who have made contributions to the architectural profession that are of profound significance.
