Who has not received a donation?

Honestly, who has not received a donation – at one point in time or another – from the more than generous philanthropic hands of Dick and Betsy DeVos? Who does not know their names, in fact? Well, Dick DeVos is a top public figure. He’s also a proud Republican and U.S. citizen. His wife Betsy is right there with him in the fight for true freedom from religious oppression, a society of firm beliefs and values, a solid education in America and more; in fact, how can she not stand for such important themes when she is none other than the U.S. President’s Secretary of Education? Yes, Dick notes that he is more than blessed to have her at his side and would not be quite the same without her help and support in all areas.

Dick may also be contacted on Facebook and Messenger; he has more than 18,000 likes and following already. He lives in Grand Rapids, Mich. You may learn more about him by visiting dickdevos.com.

Dick and his wife have recently lifted the full veil on their philanthropy, it seems, when Dick discussed numerous aspects of their past and present giving efforts as well as their current strategies and plans for the future. Dick primarily noted that his giving is for a reason – to help people and not to push them in any sort of direction in regards to politics or other viewpoints. He merely points that the purpose of all people in life is to find their purpose, and his is certainly to give back to those in need, just as he and his faithful wife have done for several decades and only hope to further improve upon. MLive recently interviewed Dick on all these points and was more than happy to have had the opportunity; Dick notes that he was no less blessed from the unique encounter as it offered him another speaking opportunity to show the world what he believes in and what really matters in this life – doing good.

Dick also mentioned several relevant statistics and strategies that have worked wonders for his team in the last few years – knowledge and experience that he has gleamed, in beautiful combination, throughout his many giving endeavors. Did you know that he and his wife have topped records in charitable giving? They have generously given such amounts that even other millionaires or billionaires themselves would re-consider or hold their hand back from giving; this speaks to their true heart to serve as leaders – they genuinely care for the needs of others. As we know, not all other popular leaders of wealth ever say the same, and that’s what makes Dick unique.

How Betsy DeVos Became Interested In School Choice

Betsy DeVos was an early leader in the educational reform movement. In the 1980’s she, along with her husband Dick, visited a private school which is located in Grand Rapids, Michigan that is called Potter’s House Christian School. While visiting they had conversations with the low-income parents of students who were making huge sacrifices in order to provide their children with an educational facility that was safe, effective, and filled with curious children who wanted to understand the world. Betsy and Dick kept going back to Potter’s House Christian School and eventually started paying the tuition costs of a large number of students who have attended the school ever since.

One of the problems in the United States that Betsy DeVos has pointed out is that educational outcomes are far too dependent on the zip code that children are living in. Rich communities have great schools while poor communities have dysfunctional schools with high dropout rates. She believes that providing parents and students with school choice, where they can attend charter schools instead of public schools, will lead to more children receiving the education that they deserve. She believes this can be accomplished in part by educational reforms such as tax credits, education savings accounts, vouchers, and other means. Check this related article from nypost.com.

In addition to providing donations to educational reform organizations, Betsy DeVos has also served on the board of these organizations. She has been a board member of the Foundation for Excellence in Education, Kids Hope USA, the Alliance for School Choice, and the American Federation for Children. She has lent her expertise and enthusiasm to these organization in order to further the expansion of school choice across the United States. So far, there are 33 private choice programs in 25 states in the U.S. plus in Washington D.C.

Betsy DeVos was appointed the U.S. Secretary of Education in early 2017, after President Trump started his term. Her interest in education was sparked early as her mother was a public school teacher. Once her own children started attending school, it dawned on Betsy that not every child in America gets a quality education like her children were receiving. She decided to become an advocate for these children as well as their parents who needed a voice in the quality of education their children were receiving. She believes that neither the parent’s income or the zip code of children should determine whether or not they receive the education they deserve.

Outside of her interest in education, Betsy has also been a business leader, serving as the Chairman of the Windquest Group which is an investment firm that specializes in industry and green technology. She has also served on a variety of boards for nonprofits in areas such as the arts and community building.

George Soros may have been world’s richest man

George Soros is one of the richest men in the entire world. He has gained a reputation among investors as being one of the most talented speculators in the history of the markets. His funds, beginning with Soros Fund Management, have returned over 25 percent, over a period of 40 years. This easily qualifies him among the most adroit and sophisticated investors who have ever lived.

But many do not realize the vast extent of Soros’ philanthropy. Since 1970, Soros has given away more than $15 billion, mostly through his philanthropic organization the Open Society Foundations. It’s interesting to note that Soros, unlike many of his plutocratic peers, has always had a keen interest in philanthropy and has donated vast sums of his personal fortune at every stage of his own development as an entrepreneur and speculator.

Some investors, such as Warren Buffett, have held the philosophy that they can generate such phenomenal returns and that they are such good custodians of wealth that it would be improper of them to give away principle that they could otherwise put to work in the markets to reap outstanding returns. In fact, this philosophy is probably shared by the majority of those billionaires who appear on the Forbes 400 list. This means that many of these billionaires have never donated significant portions of their own wealth at any given stage of their lives. Instead, their entire capital has been given free rein to compound annually, generating phenomenal returns, year after year. Read more about George’s life story at biography.com.

So how rich would George Soros be if he had never given away any money? Even if we take a conservative estimate that, say, he only gave away the equivalent of $1 billion in the year 1980, we still find that money that was denied the opportunity to compound at 25 percent per year would have been worth vastly more than the starting principal amount. In fact, and the case of the billion dollars that was given away in 1980 and not allowed to compound, those funds today, compounded at 25 percent, over 37 years, would be worth $3.8 trillion. Just this relatively small amounts of George Soros’s lifetime net worth, allowed to compound over 37 years at his historical rates of return, would have easily made him the richest man, not just currently but in the entire history of the world.

Considering that it is very likely that Soros has given away the equivalent of more than 1 billion dollars in 1980, it is safe to conclude that, given his phenomenal ability to generate outsized returns, had he not given away substantial portions of his net worth over the course of his career, he would easily be the richest man in the world today.

Bruce Levenson Owned The Atlanta Hawks And Served At Many Foundations

Bruce Levenson sold the Atlanta Hawks a little over a year ago to Tony Ressler after owning the team for about 11 years, reports Forbes.com. On the way out, he appears to have hit a snag with AIG, the team’s former insurance company. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Levenson along with Atlanta Hawks Basketball & Entertainment had opted to buyout then General Manager Danny Ferry’s contract as he would not be part of the new ownership, and under the insurance policy at the time AHBE and Levenson were entitled to file a claim for losss incurred by such an event. AIG however, does not acknowledge AHBE and Levenson’s rights to do so, and as a result have not honored this claim. Levenson and AHBE are planning to sue AIG for not honoring the claim, and for any damages relating to court costs.

Bruce Levenson has been a major business figure for nearly 40 years, primarily known for co-founding United Communications Group (UCG). He started this company out of his home where it began with his journal, Oil Express, a source of information for oil industry news. Soon he built the company portfolio to many other publications including technology journals, healthcare news, and even information about mortgage and real estate. UCG is also the owner of Gas Buddy, a gas price mobile app that’s come in handy for many truck drivers.

Levenson also sat on the boards of several charity groups including Hoop Dreams and the I Have a Dream Foundation. He also wanted people to learn about the importance of the Holocaust, so he started the “Bringing the Lessons Home” foundation to teach young people about it and even give them an opportunity to become tour guides at the Holocaust Memorial Museum. He also is the key founder of the University of Maryland’s Center for Philanthropy and Non-Profit Leadership, https://www.benzinga.com/news/17/03/9165680/university-of-marylands-non-profit-initiative-is-changing-higher-education.

Dick DeVos Reveal The Extent Of His Family’s Charitable Giving

Dick and Betsy Devos established their charitable giving fund, the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, in 1989. Dick recently revealed that since then they have given almost $139 million to a large number of charities and nonprofits with an emphasis on education, healthcare, arts, and community. In just 2015 the foundation provided $11.6 million in funds for charities. Combined with the rest of the DeVos family they have collectively given $1.33 billion and are ranked #24 in Forbe’s 2015 list of America’s Top Givers.

Due to their focus on education, the couple donated over $3 million in 2015 to various educational causes and another $357,000 to support groups fighting for education reform. Dick DeVos has commented that he doesn’t see that the current system is helping children fulfill the American Dream and additionally sees the issue as a civil rights problem. If a child doesn’t grow up in the “right” zip code they simply don’t have access to a quality education. Some of the educations charities that the foundation provided with funding in 2015 includes the Compass College of Cinematic Arts in Grand Rapids, Northwood University in Midland, and the West Michigan Aviation Academy. The academy they support provides high school students with an education that prepares them for a career in the aviation industry, from plane maintenance, to engineering, to earning a pilot’s license.

Another focus of the DeVos Foundation is in arts and culture. In 2015 they donated more than $2.4 million to a number of causes designed to support artists as well as to strengthen the business side of the industry. They had previously given $22 million in order to create the DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland. The program aims to inform students studying arts management on how to run an art institution as well as how to raise funds.

Dick DeVos has talked about bringing in their children for their input on where to donate money that will have the most positive impact. In a recent donation, his kids didn’t think he was providing enough to a cause to really make a difference. Dick agreed that they were right and that they could do more and so they did by providing sufficient funds to fully realize the ideals of the charity.

Dick DeVos started his career at Amway in 1974, served in various Vice Presidential positions, and was Chief Executive Officer of the company from 1993 to 2002. Dick is also a part owner of the NBA Orlando Magic team. Dick is the Chief Executive Officer of The Windquest Group, an investment firm he founded that specializes in the fields of technology, clean-tech industry, hospitality, manufacturing, and nonprofits.
